About Leptospira IgG/IgM Rapid Test - PEERCHECK
The PEERCHECK Leptospira IgG/IgM Rapid Test is a point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic kit used for the qualitative detection and differentiation of IgG and IgM antibodies to Leptospira interrogans. Manufactured by Peerless Biotech, this immunochromatographic assay is designed to provide rapid results to aid in the diagnosis of leptospirosis.
Key features
Purpose: The test identifies a person's immune response to the Leptospira bacteria, which helps determine whether the infection is recent (IgM) or past (IgG).
Speed: Results are typically available within 1015 minutes, allowing for faster diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Sample type: The test can be performed using a small amount of human blood, including whole blood, serum, or plasma.
Method: The test uses lateral flow technology, which provides results in a cassette or card format. If antibodies are present, they react with a gold conjugate and create a visible red line on the test cassette.
Convenience: Minimal training and no specialized lab equipment are required to perform the test, making it suitable for a point-of-care setting.
ICMR approval: The test is approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Result interpretation
The test typically has a control line (C) and separate test lines for IgM (M) and IgG (G).
Negative: Only the control line (C) appears.
Positive IgM (recent infection): A line appears at the IgM position in addition to the control line.
Positive IgG (past exposure or later-stage infection): A line appears at the IgG position in addition to the control line.
Positive IgM and IgG (ongoing infection): Lines appear at both the IgM and IgG positions, along with the control line.
Invalid: If the control line fails to appear, the test is invalid.
Limitations and important considerations
Screening tool: The PEERCHECK rapid test is a screening tool. A reactive result should be confirmed with more definitive methods, such as the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Timing: Antibody levels may not be detectable in the earliest stages of infection, and false negatives can occur if the test is performed too early.
False positives: Cross-reactivity with other conditions can sometimes cause a false-positive result.
Clinical context: The interpretation of any test result must be considered alongside other clinical findings and the professional judgment of a healthcare provider.
